Meeting Notes - April 21st

Woodland Heights Neighborhood Association
April 21, 2015 – Agenda – 7:00 p.m.

Callanan Middle School – 3010 Center Street

·         Call to order – 7:02 p.m. (13 in attendance)
·         School Bus / Parking Concerns
o   Department of Traffic (Jennifer McCoy; Mark Garret)/ Callanan Principal (Dawn Stahly) – Bus loop
o   Traffic congestion concerns on Center Street vs. the loop
·      Blocking view of students
·      Difficult to pass
·      Hard to back out of housing
o   Proposing new solution for buses and parent parking for 2015-2016 school year (removing parking restriction from South Side of Center – was only allowed after 5 p.m.)
o   Neighborhood Organization motioned to approve recommended changes & it was unanimously approved
·         Neighborhood Finance Corporation Representative
o   Wanted to share the opportunity to access funds to rehab your home
o   Up to $10,000 forgivable loan; want to stay in home for 5 years – encourage updates & neighborhood consistency
o   Every 10 years you can use $10,000; must be owner occupied
o   3.875 on a 30 year fix – current rate
·         NBSD: Sgt. Vince Valdez/ Lt. Larry Davey / Ed Leedom
o   Brought annual report for police department
o   May is recognition of police work – lots of activities planned; including a new fun run “Run with the Police” – May 16 (check out events on web page); family friendly, etc. All the money from the registrations goes to Special Olympics of Iowa.
o   SMART 911 – Emergency management website alert notification of what police / fire, etc. need to know – ahead of the emergency –  get on the site & add your information
o   Crime report – very light activity; a few burglaries, assaults/domestics 
o   Watching 24th and Rollins due to complaints and suspicious activity – made some arrests
o   24 and Rollins – fire, vacant – need to have it torn down (motion to have city council remove restriction of multiple year wait to have it torn down – need to send letter on behalf of WHO); other houses that have burned down; can we remove the others too
·      Motion unanimously passed
o   23 cases of car parking, litter debris; 7 of those on curb issues
o   Parking tickets – parking right of way & over sidewalk – slowed down
o   Impounded 4 cars
o   13 neighborhood rental inspections (2 were new to neighborhood); most are complying on first inspection (good thing)
·         New Business –
o   Eugene White – recently passed away; was nominated and won the Alice Rodine Award; Skip Moore and Doug McBride accepted the award.
o   Funeral is Saturday, April 26 – will be presenting the award to the family.
·         Adjournment – 8 p.m.
